I created two paintings in this series, Irises and Purple Iris, using a similar approach to each. In a departure from my usual paintings, I decided to use muted, neutral tones, with very little contrast between the background and foreground elements. In this painting, I wanted the yellow of the irises to stand out against the muted greens and grays, but just barely. It was a challenge for me, being used to much stronger color and tonal variety. However, I found the whole exercise rewarding and the result was a pair of beautiful paintings in this and Purple Iris.

The original painting measures 18" x 27", oil on canvas.
