This painting depicts the Buddhist guardian figure Weituo, his hands pressed together in prayer and reverence, faithfully guarding the Buddha, his teachings, and Buddhist monasteries, monks, and treasures. General Wei's stance and facial expression capture his dual role as fierce defender of and unwavering believer in the Buddha, the teachings and the daily life of the Buddhist community. Appropriately, Weituo is also considered a symbol of determination in spiritual training and practice. The figure was rendered in liquid metal which was then oxidized to produce a beautiful green patina. The shadow areas of the image were painted in dark copper, allowing the light to reflect brightly from certain angles. Opalescent rays of light surround the figure. When I first saw this statue, I was captivated by the ornate armor the figure wears, and the peace he exudes. I had never seen anything quite like it, and the result is a compelling image.
