Those unfamiliar with the elevated subway lines in New York City may wonder, "Just what exactly is that?" As the sun approaches its zenith, the overhead train tracks cast a dizzying array of shadows on the streets below. The idea for this image came to me when I bought a roll of fluorescent orange canvas. I was thrilled. I would never have been able to achieve that color on my own, but the canvas was already prepared. That also meant I had to be careful, I couldn't cover any misplaced brushstrokes with the background color. I had witnessed this scene many times, the shadows creating a geometric wonderland under the subway and decided to paint it using a duotone effect. I'm delighted by the colors and composition in the final image.
