I remember once seeing a photograph of a Japanese floral arrangement with a single Bearded Iris, and being struck by the beauty of its simplicity. All of the floral arrangements I had seen relied not just on the beauty of the flowers, but the sheer volume of flowers as well. It changed the way I thought and saw things. I decided to do a large painting using this same approach. I made the single Bearded Iris the focal point, and placed it on a large, intensely yellow background. In the end, both the flower and the background color stand out and demand our attention.
